Introduction
The Experiment Database for Fire Science, or EDaFS, currently at Version 0.9, provides a structure for accessing and managing experiments conducted by the fire science community. EDaFS also provides for the storage of test data, documentation, photographs, video clips, and other related materials is a single location in a cohesive manner. Recent developments in database design enable more comprehensive access to data, enabling queries that span many tables (e.g. multiple experiments or experiment groups) and data types, queries that cannot be achieved in the existing file-based structure for fire data, the Fire Data Management System (FDMS 2.0). EDaFS architecture is based on a commercial database system, ORACLE 10g, and supports multimedia files, such as photographs, video clips, and large documents. Because XML is becoming the standard for data interchange over the web, EDaFS can be extended to allow access to and to query experimental data available in an XML format.
